Description |
BW replica on cardboard backing of the Indiana Harbor Belt North Hump Gibson Yards looking west in 1975. Typed description: The North Hump view to the west end of the Gibson Yard was named for David Gibson, an early settler. Gibson Transfer Yard was constructed on the Michigan Central, now Penn Central, right of way. The card retarder is now an integral part in sophisticated computer yard switching operations. As cars pass over a hump, the system wieghs the cars, takes into consideration both temperature and wind condition, aligns switches depending on the destination of car, and programs the retarder to supply the correct pressure to the wheel flange, thus controlling the speed of the car into the proper classification track. 1896 -- IHB -- 1976 |
