Description Altrusa International, founded in 1917, was one of the oldest classified women's service organizations. Composed of business and professional women performing community service, it supports literacy and social service programs worldwide. The Hammond (Calumet) Altrusa Club includes members from Hammond, Highland, Munster, Lansing, Calumet City, East Chicago, and Whiting. The group was organized in May 1948.
